The name of Eugene Peterson is known to most people as the author of THE MESSAGE, a contemporary rendering of the Bible. His down-to-earth, often idiomatic prose has helped many to have a better understanding of the Scriptures. What may not be as well known is that he has written other books which may be of interest and which may enrich one's life. Among those that we have in the Resource Center are LIVING THE MESSAGE, daily readings for an entire year with Peterson's paraphrase of a verse and an accompanying short illustration or explanation. While the remaining four volumes are directed primarily to pastors, anyone who is in leadership in a congregation may be surprised by some of the relevance of Peterson's wrestling with his Christian experience and his pastoral vocation. FIVE SMOOTH STONES FOR PASTORAL WORK, UNDER THE UNPREDICTABLE PLANT, WORKING THE ANGLES, and THE CONTEMPLATIVE PASTOR contain amazing insights for not only clergy but for lay persons as well. At the end of THE CONTEMPLATIVE PASTOR are poems with startling imagery, such as the postman as Gabriel during Advent or the event of the Christ-Child as a dance. "A way with words" we say about favorite authors - such is Eugene Peterson.
